Question:

Let’s consider some interpretations of Heracles. You can choose to follow EITHER A (modern film) or B (modern psychology). DO NOT DO BOTH.

Option A:

Watch the following video clip from Disney’s movie Hercules. This clip condenses much of what we are studying in this Module. Select one myth/story/labor from this unit and compare it to the compressed version in the video. What did Disney do accurately? What did they change? And why do you think they changed it?

Video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOL-EJZjmp0

Option B:

From Slide #42 in Module 8, I have suggested that Hercules represents a dichotomy – a contrast in opposites. Select one of these pairs and describe where you see each side in the mythological stories in this unit (Module 8). You need to explain BOTH sides in your paragraph. Why do you think the ancient authors wanted to show that he has 2 sides?

Select from this list:

1. divine/human

2. sane/insane

3. male/female (Note: having a boyfriend does not make him feminine – it was typical Greek male behavior to be married and have a boyfriend)

4. human/animal

5. life/death

6. Nature/culture

Notes about citation:

You can use parenthetical notation for this assignment. Please see the examples below to understand how to do so, and use the proper placement of punctation symbols. Please make sure these references come at the end of the sentence before final punctuation. Also, all titles should be italicized.

From Anthology:

The race of Golden people was the first race of humans, according to Hesiod (Hesiod, Works and Day, lines 129-147).

Hermes killed Argos in the story of Io (Apollodorus H).

Actaeon saw Diana bathing naked (Hyginus 181).

From Ovid:

Eurydice died when she was bitten on the ankle by a snake (Ovid, Metamorphoses, 10.10-15).

Io regained her human appearance in Egypt (Ovid, Metamorphoses, 1. 1015-1037).

From Lectures:

Both the peacock and the cow were sacred to Hera (Module 3, slide 25).
